Research

Research is one of the most crucial elements of the design process in my opinion, as results from primary or secondary research typically dictate the direction that the product will take. Researching target markets, anthropometric data, and manufacturing techniques are all crucial elements that can help justify a final design.

This research was for a live project working with high-street brand Wilko's. I used information about the brand's three main market sectors that they had given, as well as my own market research to determine which market sector my product would best targeted towards. Mintel reports often provide easily access on specific data that is extremely useful to examine both macro and micro trends in the market.

This research was undertaken when working on an IKEA-inspired lighting project, and I wanted to gain a greater understanding of different bulb technologies, as well as varying factors between bulbs such as temperature (in Kelvin), brightness, and wattage.

These pages are taken from two individual projects, meaning that very different anthropometric data was needed. However the need for this data was equally important in both of these situations, as it allowed the product to be designed ergonomically, allowing it to be used comfortably by 90% of the population. Some of the data was collected first hand (left), whereas some was found online (right). Explore this project here.

These two pages of research are from differing projects, the left is primary researched gathered through a questionnaire whilst researching dog bowls. The right page shows socio-economic data which was crucial to aid the design process when designing for The Conran Shop, located in Chelsea. The data given gave an excellent indication of what an appropriate price for the product would be, as well as critically analysing existing products on the market. Explore this project here.

Analysis of competitor products is another process of the research stage that I typically undergo. The left page shows a brief analysis on a specific product, exploring its strengths and weaknesses. This builds up an idea of what the product to be designed should, and shouldn't include. The right page explores an entire category of products, premium consumer mice, and examines elements such as stylistic design choices, materials and manufacturing techniques, pricing, technology, and tarket market. My aim for this project was to create a premium looking and feeling mouse at an affordable price, so by determining how this "premium" feel was created, it allowed me to try and incorporate it into my own design.
